Poster Design for the Competition.

1. Introduction

Can I safely assume that you’ve visited this website because of the QR Code at the bottom of the poster? Oh if you’re not,  I will just introduce this anyway. Dyscalculia is a mathematics disability that’s currently affecting about 4-6% of the whole world population. It is a disability that causes the patient not being able to recognize numbers. For instance: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (Are you reading this in your brain now? congratulation if you could! it means that you don’t have such disability).

Adobe Air Application published onto Android.

2. Development

Because I’m such an android fan (true story, bro). How is Android application differs from an air one? One could probably says it lags more than usual compared to native application  which I totally agree with. However, air application is cross-platform which is why it’s nicer to develop using it and easier to port it over in the future to other OS-es by using the same classes, probably just different resolution.

What’s more? An international student came over and talked to me during the presentation at DSI (student hall?) saying that Flash is such a powerful tool because he used it for interacting with hardware. He was an electrical engineering student.

Plus, Minus, Multiply, Divide

3. How is it going to be implemented for people with Dyscalculia?

Repeat. Repeat and Repeat. Keep repeating the same number and hopefully they will be able to learn it one day later. An interesting game play method will be implemented in the number system.

All you need is internet connectivity and an android phone with Adobe air installed (internationally!), you can just download the application once into your phone. After that, you can let people with dyscalculia trying to learn it any time and anywhere that they truly wish to.

Furthermore, the application will speak out the number.

Then, the user can listen and see the number being displayed on the phone.

To circle or not to circle.

4. Importance of Number

How important are numbers in our daily life? If we know basic plus and minus, we will be able to calculate the price of the lunch we ate with the drink we drank. That way we will not get cheated by the evil vendors. However, we can always pretend to be a smart person and pay with bigger amount of money and then, pretend to like know how to count and see see the money before we place them inside our wallet.

Apart from that, we will be able to tell basic time so just in case when your mom decided to bake a cake and asked you for the time since the cake requires 30 minutes before it’s done; we know it’s 2.15 and the cake is ready for om-nom-nom at 2.45 if you like it hot and freshly served.

Anyway, this is just a blog post to provide some information (basically what I’ve said during the presentation at student hall) and no, I don’t really wish to win the competition or get selected to enter the final round >_>.
